An art exhibition in Valencia remembers the exploits of the women of Greenham Common

The Valencian artist Mayte Navarro Golf exhibits a selection of her works this September in Valencia and invites us, through them, to recover the history of the protest of the missiles destined for Greenham Common, the English military base, through her exhibition "About the web and the network" at 28 Jacomart Street in the Torrefiel neighborhood and will remain on display until September 28 and remember the exploits of the women of Greenham Common.

"ABOUT THE WEB AND THE NETWORK"

OPEN THE NEW EXHIBITION SEASON OF ESPAI JACOMART IN VALENCIA

When the Cold War was still raging, NATO intended to install nuclear weapons facing Eastern Europe without informing the population. It is, at that time, in the early 1980s, where a group of women began a protest by chaining themselves to the fences of the military base that had unprecedented repercussions in the United Kingdom. His gesture was supported by thousands of people who managed to stop him. The protest became a symbol of women's social and pacifist struggle given that it was a non-mixed movement where there were no men; The participants endured arrests, prison, insults, humiliation and constant disqualifications. Over time it was the trigger and inspiration for numerous subsequent pacifist and feminist movements around the world.

The Valencian creator is inspired by that struggle to converge her works, aesthetically and conceptually, around what happened in the women's camp: her thoughts, choruses, songs of protest and resistance "weaved" a network that the textile artist recovers to turn it in objects.

With training in fashion design, marketing and commerce. Mayte Navarro Golf has dedicated several years to researching recycling in different times and cultures. From this research, a teaching practice emerges that she applies to different workshops in cultural associations, Youth centers and at the Popular University of Valencia itself, where she teaches workshops in various headquarters. She has also collaborated in the ODS Clec Fashion Festival performative workshop in the City of Arts and Sciences and ODS - 14 in the Marina of Valencia.

His artistic work begins with a scrap of fabric that unravels, from these threads a hybrid work emerges that combines with other materials, always recycled and thick cotton fabrics (retorts) that he sometimes ages or dyes, other times he paints in oils. Her works tell us, from an ecofeminist perspective, about all the issues that concern her as a woman; they are an invitation to reflection and a call to action.

"About the web and the network" is the first exhibition of the new course at Espai d'Art Jacomart and the fourth since the new exhibition space in the Torrefiel neighborhood opened its doors last March 2023. This proposal will be followed by several more that will address everything from photography, collage and painting as well as a compilation (in preparation) of masks from all over the world, bringing together pieces from different Valencian private collectors.
